Decreased proximal tubular vectorial transport
Short name
Vectorial transport across the monolayer is the primary function of proximal tubule cells in the nephron. The cells transport both water and solutes via active and secondary active transporters.
When proximal tubule cells are grown on filter inserts, the volume and composition of the medium in the apical and basolateral compartments can be studied separately to determine variations in a vectorial transport.
Fluorescent dyes can also be used to measure transport across the monolayer either directly (transport of the dye itself) or indirectly (competition with the dye).
A differential measure of the rate of water transport can also be used in this format (Wilmes et al. 2014)
