Details for Assay 4: Western blot analysis

Description
Detects protein extracted from cell, tissue, organ or surrounding liquid (e.g. interstitium, tissue culture medium)
Validation Notes
Standard assay with a long history of use. Specificity and sensitivity vary with the particular antibody used. Demonstrated with appropriate controls in each study. You may want to look at the specific info from the company manufacturing the antibody..

Technical Details
Detection Technology Biological Objects Targetted Biological Processes Targetted
Antibody against a specific protein (or specific part of the protein) to detect it's level and location within a cell, tissue, organ or surrounding liquid (e.g. tissue culture medium). Gel electrophoresis of protein extract from the target 'sample?" (cell, tissue organ, liquid) followed by transfer (blotting) on a membrane and incubation with a specific Ab for the protein of interest. Visualization of the protein of interest-Ab complex can vary (usually secondary Ab coupled to a fluorescent/luminescent/enzyme component).
